An abscess is a pus-filled lump that appears near the anus, rectum, or perineum (the space between the genitals and the anus). An anal abscess occurs when one of the anal glands becomes blocked and infected. Pus and fluid collect in the anal gland, resulting in a very painful abscess around the anus (buttocks).
