“Do Rabbits Get Down Syndrome? The Facts You Should Know”

Amman Mirza06 Aug, 2025Education

Photos of certain bunnies with distinctive physical traits and unusual behavior often spark online claims that the animal has “Down Syndrome.” While this comparison is popular on social media, it's not scientifically accurate. Humans and rabbits have completely different chromosomal structures. The genetic anomaly known as trisomy 21 is specific to humans. Domestic rabbits cannot possess this condition in the same biological form. However, these animals can exhibit traits that resemble developmental or neurological disorders due to congenital mutations, poor breeding practices, or environmental factors. Facial asymmetry, head tilting, & impaired motor skills are not uncommon in bunnies born with defects. Rather than using incorrect terminology, it's more appropriate to view these animals through the lens of veterinary science. Issues like hydrocephalus, inbreeding-related deformities, or other developmental challenges may explain the observed symptoms.
