Dave Cobb was channel-surfing several years ago when he held Brandi Carlile on “Austin City Limits” behaving “The Story,” a strain so jubilant he pronounced it felt like “hearing a classical that you’d never listened before.” Last year, when he was co-producing Ms. Carlile’s latest studio album, her sixth, he wanted a centerpiece with a same energy and tension as her 2007 single.
